Introduction
Infectious diseases are among the leading causes of death for residents of long-term care facilities. As a result, rates of antibiotic usage are high in such facilities. Unfortunately, as is true in other health-care settings such as clinics and hospitals, antibiotics are often used inappropriately in long-term care. This can lead to problems such as antibiotic resistance, side effects from antibiotics, drug interactions, and development of secondary infections such as Clostridium difficile.
The purpose of this program is to provide information to improve the appropriate use of antibiotics in long-term care facilities.
