Summary:
- Urinary tract infections cause significant morbidity and mortality in residents of long-term care facilities
- Asymptomatic bacteriuria is very common in residents of long-term care facilities.
- Asymptomatic bacteriuria does not require antibiotic therapy in most cases.
- Most patients with clinical urinary tract infection will have localizing symptoms.
- Only about 10% of non-catheterized febrile patients without localizing urinary symptoms will have UTI as the cause of their fever.
